Managing Mass Media (1): The world as seen through the mass media's filter

There are words for it: patriotism, nationalism and chauvinism. Both Western and Chinese news media have their own self-interests and their shares of bias and their governments have their own propagandas. How many reporters really take time to read through history books or thoroughly study the current event published by Chinese, Tibetan, or other countries before they did an interview or make a report? How many people make up their minds before they see both sides?

Keith: In the public relations PR world, it's "buyers beware". The readers will have to use their own subjective minds to judge objectively the often subjective opinions of others. As to whether a reporter takes time to do his/her homework, I think it depends very much on the individual and the professional guidelines of a particular country and/or organization (Reference: Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalistic_integrity ). Even with published guidelines and codes of conduct, there are still many cases of non-compliance and unprofessional behaviours, esp tabloids although mainstream news media are not immune either. I agree with that a "well-informed" public is becoming rare because media are trying to satisfy consumers' demand for on-the-dot, real-time, interesting news.
