April Rain Brings New Hope

The Ottawa weather finally gives us a sign of hope that spring is here to stay. Last week, there were several nights when the temp still dipped below freezing. But this afternoon, we hit +15 deg C and the sky splits open, pouring April rain on unprepared pedestrians and cyclists.

Spring is the season of growth and regeneration. So it is with this feeling of optimism that I will be moving my mother out of rehab and back into her apartment. Having broken her femur and ended up living in a hospital, a convalescent residence and a rehab centre for 4 months, she is looking forward to sleeping on her own bed and cooking her own food again. More importantly, she will be able to speak Chinese with her friends, neighbours, and shopping buddies instead of feeling alienated in an English/French speaking environment.

Let there be hope !!!

Most Canadians can expect an early spring, if you believe in the predicting powers of groundhogs.

But Western Canada should stay bundled up for snow and sleet, according to one critter and a puppet.

According to tradition, if a groundhog sees his shadow and runs back into his burrow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

Alberta's Billie Balzac saw his shadow Wednesday morning, predicting six more weeks of winter.

But spring predictions came in from more famous groundhogs, like Wiarton Willie from Wiarton, Ont., and Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania.

North America's first groundhog prediction came from Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam, who didn't see his shadow.

Soon after, Wiarton Willie also failed to see his shadow. The official announcement, which came at 8:07 a.m. ET, was greeted with cheers by the hundreds of people who braved the worst storm of the winter to attend the festivities inside a huge tent in Wiarton's Bluewater Park.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from a tree stump at dawn and, unusually, did not see his shadow, signaling that spring is just around the corner.

"He found that there was no shadow," said Bill Deeley, president of a club that organizes Groundhog Day in the western Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney. "So an early spring it will be."

Lacking a psychic groundhog to call its own, Manitoba uses a puppet to get its annual weather report.

Manitoba Merv apparently walked out of his den at Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre at sunrise Wednesday morning and saw his shadow.

Toronto also does not have a groundhog, but Herman, a Vancouver Island marmot at the Toronto Zoo, predicted an early spring as well. A marmot is a cousin to a groundhog.

你那邊剛進入春天,
香港這兩天也進入了夏天,
最高温度快30度,
穿着短袖衫,
感覺愈來愈熱,
不過我喜歡冷天的。

Thanks for all that info.

I like groundhogs, they are cute animals.

Farmers hate them because of their burrowing behaviours.

But meteorologists fear them the most because the critters never ask for a raise and they are not unionized :O

Yeah, you guessed it correctly. She was fairly anxious all right.
