家庭內部的暴力行為 / Domestic Violence

I made the following comments in response to Jenni's 20100407 article 活下去的勇氣 posted at C9樂園

Here are some sources of info for your references:

ICD9 code 995.81 shows the syndrome as including "battered person/man/spouse syndrome NEC" and any person presenting with identified physical descriptors rather than psychological descriptors falls under the general heading of "Adult physical abuse", classified under "Injury and Poisoning". In lay terms, this is a reference to any person who, because of constant and severe domestic violence usually involving physical abuse by a partner, becomes depressed and unable to take any independent action that would allow him or her to escape the abuse. The condition explains why abused people often do not seek assistance from others, fight their abuser, or leave the abusive situation. Sufferers have low self-esteem, and often believe that the abuse is their fault. Such persons usually refuse to press criminal charges against their abuser, and refuse all offers of help, often becoming aggressive or abusive to others who attempt to offer assistance. Often sufferers will even seek out their very abuser for comfort shortly after an incident of abuse.

Learned helplessness
a condition of a human being or an animal in which it has learned to behave helplessly, even when the opportunity is restored for it to help itself by avoiding an unpleasant or harmful circumstance to which it has been subjected.

Fear, Obligation & Guilt
The acronym FOG stands for Fear, Obligation & Guilt - feelings which often result from being in a relationship with a person who suffers from a Personality Disorder. It is our hope that the information on this site may help some navigate out of the FOG in their own lives.

There is another form of domestic violence that seldom get mentioned or taken seriously. It's emotional abuse. For some reasons, lawmakers decide that our emotional health is less important than our physical health. It's just wrong.

>> ... 什麼是"家庭外部的暴力行為"呢?

Within the context of violence against one or more members of a nuclear family, I would define "家庭外部的暴力行為" as external forces that encourage or execute the use of violence to deal with domestic affairs. For examples, in certain countries:
- the so-called honour killings of women by male/female relatives or villagers
- the killings of coloured men (and even white women) found having inter-racial relationships

In most cases, these external forces are the results of a more systemic, wide-spread, value-based problem.

I agree with you that both physical and emotional abuses are bad. Unfortunately, the latter is harder to prove in court despite the fact that emotional scars could also last for a life time.

Space: In an ideal society, the person carrying out justice is supposed to be blind-folded while holding a balance that represents fairness.

I was trying to distinguish btwn violent acts associated with domestic affairs and those committed elsewhere, such as robbery in a bank. But your point is well taken. Thanks !!!
