Exile:

Have you been to New Orleans? The song is probably older than you and me combined !!!

According to Wikipedia: "House of the Rising Sun"

".... lan Price of The Animals has claimed that the song was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting ...."

16th century folk song, interesting! Who would have thought. No, never been New Orleans. One of these days. I am not too keen on seeing America. We tend to have the same mini-malls and fast food places every where we go. It just bugs me.

Exile: Yes, I agree with you abt the unattractive strip malls and fast food joints in many US (and Canadian) cities. But I find the older part of New Orleans differenet because of its music and history (i.e. if you like listening to jazz, visiting old plantations, and reading Lawrence Hill). And of course, there was Katrina.

Yeah, that said but I am also a hypocritical pathetic American snob who like seeing American fast food places when I am overseas :-). Plus you can't beat our giant parking spaces at mini-malls where we can literally park 1.5 cars, right? It's a love and hate thing.

They were pushing New Orleans travel on TV the other day. They said visiting New Orleans was like visiting a "foreign" country. If I were a native New Orleanian, I don't know whether I should laugh or cry. I know it is never a compliment in the U.S when they consider you "foreign" or "exotic".

Unless I am really desperate, I try to avoid eating US/Canadian fast-food while travelling outside of N America.

>> ... we can literally park 1.5 cars
Are you kidding? Some mini-malls have parking lots the size of a piazza in Europe :O

>> ... consider you "foreign"
I understand what you mean, esp when I am checking in at the border.
